Strong Weekend Storms Cause Local Damage

Strong thunderstorms rolled through Northwest Iowa early Sunday morning, with winds causing damage and knocking out power to hundreds of residents.

In Hospers, the Sioux County Sheriff issued a no travel advisory through Sunday morning because of several downed trees and power lines that took out power in the town. A tree blocked the roadway at Jackson Avenue and 330th street, about three miles southwest of Boyden. Granville and Le Mars also had extensive tree damage and power outages.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office reported gusts of 62 mph while the Sioux County Airport showed winds at 64 mph. Estimates are that there were some gusts approaching 70 mph in areas east of Orange City towards Granville.

Reports of rainfall were between 2 and 4 inches in much of Sioux County with the heaviest amounts in the southwest portion of the county.

On Sunday night MidAmerican Energy reported that power was restored to Northwestern Iowa, after over 1,000 were without power on Sunday.
