Sioux County Community Health Partners is partnering with Siouxnami for a Sioux County Sun Safety project. To help combat Iowa’s high cancer rates, Sioux County Community Health Partners in partnership with Siouxnami waterpark received a grant from the Iowa Cancer Consortium, Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, and the University of Iowa Healthcare Melanoma Program. Sioux County sees an average of 19 new cases of melanoma every year. On a recent Daily Grind episode Angela Loutsch, Health Educator with Community Health Partners Sioux County, Loutsch lays out how melanoma can be prevented.
“Sioux County on average has 19 new cases of melanoma every year just within our county. Understanding that 92% of melanoma cases can be prevented by …caring for our skin properly when we have sun exposure.”
Community Health Partners and Siouxnami plan to use the grant to host an event at the All Seasons Center. Loutsch describes the event.
“One of the things we’re doing is an educational table on Friday, July 10th, and then again on Thursday the 16th at Siouxnami. We will be there from noon to five with just different pieces of information that people can gather. And then, as a part of the grant, they supplied us with three gallons, three one gallon jugs of sunscreen. And so we’re giving away free sunscreen during that time to people that are at Siouxnami.”
Sunscreen should be on for 30-minutes before jumping in water. Loutsch explains some tips to keep sunscreen effective.
“On average reapplying should be every two hours, but if you’re more sensitive to the sun it should be more often. If you’re sweating or swimming it actually should be a little bit more often because even if it is a waterproof sunscreen that should stay on in the pool, some of it is still washing off.”
As well as the event, the All Seasons Center will be hosting a giveaway. Jill Miller, Head of Marketing and Staff at the All Seasons Center and also spoke on The Daily Grind episode, describes how to enter it.
“We’re also doing a coloring contest. The coloring pictures have some information and pictures related to sun safety. We’re doing, everybody that submits a picture gets a day pass to Siouxnami, for the rest of the Summer. We’re also doing prizes for six and under, and then seven to eleven and twelve and above. And then every entry also is getting entered to win a family pass to Siouxnami.”
The tent with Community Health Partners and Siouxnami will be at the All Seasons Center July 10th and 16th. You can pick up a coloring sheet on July 16th at the tent, or anytime afterwards at Siouxnami.
