Sioux Falls Man Sentenced in Forgery Case

A Sioux Falls man was sentenced in Sioux County District Court last week for forgery.  According to a press release from the Sioux County Attorney’s Office, 32-year-old Donald Emile Joseph Chasse III, was sentenced for two counts of Forgery, both class D felonies.

This case arose on November 18, 2022, when Chasse entered four Northwest Iowa bank branches cashing four forged checks totaling more than $19,000. When the checks were returned, the banks contacted the Sioux Center Police Department.  Surveillance footage from the banks assisted in identifying the suspect as Chasse, who was charged with Theft in the First Degree and four counts of Forgery. Chasse was charged as a habitual offender, having previously been convicted of two prior felonies.

On April 29, 2024, Chasse pled guilty to two counts of Forgery, and was sentenced to serve a prison term not to exceed five years in the Iowa Department of Corrections. Chasse was ordered to pay criminal fines, restitution to the banks in the amount he stole, and to submit a sample of his DNA for profiling. When Chasse is released in Iowa, he will be turned over to South Dakota where he is also wanted.
