Sioux County Sheriff’s Office Warns of Scam Targeting Families of Recent Inmates

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a scam in which callers posing as deputies are contacting family members of people recently booked into the Sioux County Jail.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the scammer—often using a private or spoofed number—claims to be a deputy and tells the family that the inmate can be released if bail is paid online or if the caller covers the cost of an ankle monitor.

Authorities emphasize that the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office will never call to request or collect money for bail, fines, or any other fees.

“Anyone who receives such a call should hang up immediately and avoid providing any personal or financial information,” the department said.

Residents with questions or who believe they may have been targeted are encouraged to contact Deputy Harmelink at 712-737-3307.
