The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office is alerting residents to a legitimate mailing they may soon see in their mailbox.
Sheriff Nate Huizenga says the Iowa State Sheriffs’ and Deputies’ Association conducts the fundraiser annually, but with scams on the rise, the office wants residents to know what to expect before it arrives.
Huizenga says some residents will receive renewal forms if they’ve participated before, while others may get new membership invitations in the coming weeks, with multiple mailings scheduled throughout the year.
He says the letter will include several identifying features.
The sheriff says the mailing may raise questions for some residents because the return address may not be from Sioux County.
He says that’s because the membership program is handled through a central sheriff’s office elsewhere in Iowa.
While the mailing itself is legitimate, Huizenga says it also serves as a good reminder to stay alert for scams.
He stresses that neither the association nor the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office will ever ask for donations over the phone.
Huizenga says one of the biggest warning signs of a scam is pressure to act quickly.
Residents with questions about the mailing are encouraged to contact the Sioux County Sheriff’s Office directly for verification.
