A powerful derecho swept through Sioux County earlier this month, leaving behind a trail of damaged trees and tough decisions for homeowners. Now, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is stepping in to help residents assess the aftermath. How do you know if a damaged tree can recover or if it’s time to say goodbye? John Buntsma from Sioux County Extension talks about what comes after the cleanup.
John says it’s not just about what’s fallen—it’s about what’s left. If more than half the canopy is gone, or if the bark has significant damage, that tree may not survive.
And what about sealing those wounds with paint or tar? Turns out, that old advice might do more harm than good.
If you want to learn more, you’re invited to a free public workshop on Monday, August 18th at 6:30 PM at the Sioux County Extension Office in Orange City. District Forester Sarah Bell will walk through how to assess tree health, choose replacements, and help young trees weather future storms.
Pre-registration is encouraged. You can sign up online at go.iastate.edu/tree or call the Extension Office at 712-737-4230 during business hours.
Whether you’re unsure about a damaged tree or planning to replant, this workshop will equip you with the facts and options you need. It’s free, local, and designed to help you move forward with practical guidance and expert insight.
