Sioux County Democrats gathered last night at the Ridge Golf Course to watch election results come in live.
An hour before polling stations closed and official results for Iowa races were counted, many people were feeling excited. One of the people there lays out what their biggest issue is going into the election. They were most concerned about public health in Iowa and voted for Chris Jones for Iowa Ag Secretary because she believes he will address water quality issues and farming inefficiency in Iowa.
“You can produce so much food. And I would like to see a lot more of our land turn to grass and more high intensity. And you know, of course, we would always have some soybeans, but we have too much. I mean, we’re driving our our topsoil down the road is how I put it with ethanol, I think is a boondoggle.”
Katie Crumrine, sits on the Sioux County Democratic Central Committee and is also the chair for fundraising. She was excited to see the results and says she has come across a lot of people while campaigning who say they are ready for a change in Iowa.
“This year has been a huge fight for the Democrats. Uh, just in regards to, um, polling and in regards to campaigning, we’ve had people, even from our committee out every single weekend, door knocking, talking to people and people are ready for a change. I think, um, both on a state level, on a national level, but even locally. And I think that we’re going to see a lot of seats flipped tonight.”
The room grew more excited as results came in and it looked as if Democrats would win many of the Iowa statewide races. A few attendees lay out what they hope a Democrat governor will do for Iowa.
“Because there are a lot of there are a lot of small hospitals that have closed, and it’s harder for women to get served if they’re pregnant. So, um, I think some of that healthcare money has been moved.”
Along with healthcare, other attendees expressed concern for Iowa’s education score, which was once first in the nation, and the economy.
