The Sioux County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing Tuesday, October 13, as it considers the second reading of proposed zoning changes governing data centers.

The hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. in the Board of Supervisors’ Room at the Sioux County Courthouse, 210 Central Avenue Southwest in Orange City.

The proposed changes to County Ordinance No. 1 advanced on a 4–1 vote at the board’s September 29 meeting, with Supervisor Dan Altena opposed.

During the board’s September 15 discussion, Shane Walter addressed requirements developers would face and what he described as potential benefits for Sioux County.

“They’re going to have to conduct studies and will direct where those studies get done, independent parties. All of that has to be in place. So there’s going to be quite a benefit to the county. Not to mention the industries in the county that depend on a data center like that,” Walter said.

Tuesday’s hearing provides another opportunity for public input before supervisors consider the proposed amendment on its second reading.

If approved Tuesday, the amendment would move to a third and final consideration scheduled for October 27 at 9 a.m. If approved at that reading, it would be published and take effect upon publication.

The proposed ordinance is available for the public to review at siouxcounty.org.
