With Siouxland receiving its first dose of winter weather last weekend, Sioux County authorities are reminding motorists to slow down and stay alert on the roads.
Lieutenant Deputy Sheriff Justin DeBruin says one of the most important things drivers can do is reduce their speed.
DeBruin adds that recent fog has created another hazard, as vehicles with automatic headlights don’t always activate.
He also cautions against using cruise control on slick or icy roads, noting that it reduces a driver’s control and reaction time. DeBruin says motorists should apply their brakes gently and give themselves plenty of space.
Staying aware of the weather forecast is another key part of winter driving safety, DeBruin says.
He notes that early in the season, it’s common for drivers to need a mental reset as they adjust to winter road conditions.
