Sioux Center Selected for Statewide First Impressions Program

Sioux Center is one of five Iowa communities selected to take part in the 2026 First Impressions program, a statewide initiative aimed at strengthening tourism, attracting new residents, and improving overall quality of life.

The program, offered through a partnership between Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the Iowa Economic Development Authority / Iowa Tourism Office, gives communities an outside perspective on how they are experienced by first-time visitors.

As part of the process, trained “secret” evaluators will visit Sioux Center throughout the spring and summer months. They will assess more than 80 different aspects of the community, including attractions, amenities, and the overall visitor experience.

Their findings will be compiled into a detailed report outlining both immediate and long-term strategies to enhance Sioux Center’s appeal and community vitality. Results will be shared with local stakeholders and presented at a public community forum later this year.

Sioux Center Communications Coordinator Maggie Landegent says the city already draws visitors for a variety of reasons and sees the program as an opportunity to build on that momentum.

“We know people are coming to Sioux Center from all over, visiting Dordt University, traveling for business, coming for athletic competitions, and swimming at Siouxnami Waterpark. We want to learn how to improve visitors’ whole-community experience and spark excitement to come back and even consider life here.”

Selection into the program is competitive. Sioux Center joins Avoca, Manchester, Sibley, and Waverly as the five Iowa communities chosen for 2026.

Ann Vogelbacher, a state tourism specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, says the program is designed to give communities practical, actionable feedback.

“First Impressions provides meaningful, actionable insights—helping communities recognize their strengths and challenges and identify improvements that can make a big difference.”

Evaluators are expected to complete their visits in the coming months, with a final report and recommendations anticipated later this year.
