Sioux Center Reconsiders Ban on ROW Tree Planting

Sioux Center residents will see more discussion before any decision is made on whether to allow trees in street right-of-way (ROW) areas.

The City Council has been weighing an ordinance that would prohibit planting trees between sidewalks and curbs in the future. While property owners are responsible for caring for those trees, the city must remove them if they die or become diseased—an expense ultimately covered by taxpayers. That issue has drawn attention in recent years as Emerald Ash Borer and summer storms have damaged many trees in Sioux Center.

At the September 15th council meeting, several residents voiced support for keeping trees in the right-of-way, citing their value for shade, appearance, and community amenities. A petition was also submitted, asking the council to delay a vote and explore other options.

After hearing public input, the council decided to pause the second reading of the ordinance and continue studying the issue. Mayor Dale Vander Berg thanked residents for engaging in the discussion and encouraged ongoing communication with city staff.
