Sioux Center Physician Named Iowa Family Physician of the Year

Dr. David Janssen, a family physician at Sioux Center Health for the last seven years, has been named the 2025–2026 Iowa Family Physician of the Year by the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians. He received the honor during the organization’s annual installation and awards ceremony on November 7 at Prairie Meadows Event Center.

The award recognizes one physician each year who exemplifies the tradition of the family doctor and upholds the highest standards of family medicine. Speaking on Sioux County Radio’s Daily Grind program, Dr. Janssen described how the journey to receiving the award began with a simple act of gratitude from someone he serves.

Dr. Janssen graduated from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine and completed his residency at Quad Cities Genesis in Davenport. Today, he provides comprehensive care for patients of all ages at Sioux Center Health’s critical access hospital, serves as an OB provider, and contributes to the Siouxland Memory Center. He says the heart of family medicine aligns closely with how he views his role.

Patients and colleagues describe him as having “infectious energy and a ready sense of humor,” qualities that have made him a favorite among those he serves. His commitment to community extends beyond medicine—he directs musical productions, performs in improv shows, and sings at local events.

Dr. Janssen also noted the significance of receiving an award that has previously honored other local physicians.

The Iowa Academy of Family Physicians represents more than 1,600 members across the state. It is part of the American Academy of Family Physicians, one of the nation’s largest medical specialty organizations with more than 129,000 members.

Sioux Center Health will be hosting an open house at the Town Center to recognize Dr. Janssen on Tuesday, Nov 18th, from noon to 1:00 pm. The public is invited to attend.
