Sioux Center’s National Night Out will move to a new location this year, giving organizers more room for an expanding lineup of family activities and opportunities to meet local first responders.
The community event will be held Tuesday, August 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the joint-use parking lot between Open Space Park and Sioux Center Middle School. The event has traditionally run from 6 to 8 p.m., but will begin and end 30 minutes earlier this year.
Meeting First Responders Outside an Emergency
Sioux Center Police Officer Kyle Munneke has helped organize National Night Out since joining the department in 2023, although the community began participating before his arrival. National Night Out is a nationwide program traditionally held on the first Tuesday of August.
Munneke says the event allows residents to interact with police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical personnel in a more relaxed environment.
“A lot of times when we encounter the public, it’s not always in a positive time,” Munneke said.
He explained that the same is often true for firefighters and EMS personnel, who commonly meet residents during emergencies or other difficult situations. National Night Out instead allows children and adults to visit with first responders, explore their vehicles and learn more about their work.
Activities, Refreshments and Car-Seat Checks
The free evening will include a meet-and-greet with officers, emergency vehicles from local police, fire and EMS agencies, and inflatable activities for children.
Fareway will provide free ice cream bars, while Hy-Vee will provide additional refreshments. Sioux Center Walmart is donating a children’s bicycle that will be given away during the event.
Sioux Center Health and Promise Community Health Center will also conduct child car-seat assessments. Families that complete an assessment will receive a five-dollar coupon that can be used at the Siouxnami Waterpark concession stand.
New Location Offers More Room
Munneke says National Night Out has added activities and community partners over the past several years. That growth helped prompt the move to the joint-use parking lot.
Weather permitting, organizers also hope the Sioux Center Fire Department can provide a water activity where children can cool off. The final arrangement will depend on conditions that evening.
“But that’s why we moved it there, to give ourselves a little more space and opportunity to continue to expand the program,” Munneke said.
Building Relationships and Community Trust
Munneke says the event’s larger purpose is similar to the mission of the school resource officer program: allowing children to meet public safety personnel early and under positive circumstances.
While children may be taught that police officers, firefighters and EMS personnel are safe people they can trust, community events provide the personal experiences that can reinforce that message.
“And so if we can have that positive experience more often than a negative experience, I think that just builds a lot of community trust and we can all work together to better Sioux Center,” Munneke said.
The Sioux Center Police Department organizes National Night Out, but Munneke says its continued growth depends on the participation of other emergency agencies, health care providers and local businesses.
“That’s really what makes it successful,” Munneke said. “And so I’m just thankful for the partnerships that we have.”
