Sioux Center residents won’t see a new ordinance banning tree planting in street right-of-way areas, but some planting restrictions may be on the horizon.
The City Council revisited the issue this week following earlier public discussion about whether trees should be allowed between sidewalks and curbs. City Manager Scott Wynja said he’s spoken with leaders from other Iowa cities that already have restrictions on right-of-way planting. He noted the review was done to understand how common those limitations are statewide.
While no new ordinance has been introduced, Wynja says Sioux Center already has a tree ordinance in place.
Under current policy, property owners are responsible for maintaining right-of-way trees, but the city must handle removal if the trees die or become diseased — a cost ultimately borne by taxpayers. The discussion resurfaced following widespread damage from Emerald Ash Borer infestations and recent storms, which have increased tree removal expenses.
Wynja says city staff will now develop a more detailed plan to define future right-of-way tree planting guidelines.
