Sioux Center Man Faces Felony Eluding and OWI Charges

A Sioux Center man is facing multiple charges, including two Class D felonies, after authorities say he led officers on a high-speed pursuit early Saturday morning.

According to a criminal complaint, 20-year-old Everett Grey Fedders of Sioux Center was arrested around 1:20 a.m. on March 21st. He is charged with Operating While Intoxicated, 3rd offense, and eluding at more than 25 miles per hour over the speed limit, both Class D felonies.

Court documents state an officer observed Fedders leaving an underage drinking party near Garfield Avenue before traveling southbound at 71 miles per hour in a 55-mile-per-hour zone.

Authorities say when the officer activated emergency lights and sirens, Fedders turned onto a gravel road and accelerated to speeds estimated between 76 and 80 miles per hour in a 50-mile-per-hour zone.

The pursuit continued onto Fir Avenue, where Fedders nearly entered the ditch before eventually turning into a driveway and stopping. He was taken into custody at gunpoint.

According to the affidavit, officers observed signs of impairment, including a strong odor of alcohol, bloodshot and watery eyes, slurred speech, and impaired balance. Fedders provided a preliminary breath test reading of 0.145.

Authorities say he was unable to complete field sobriety tests due to burns on both hands, reportedly sustained earlier at a bonfire. He was transported to Sioux Center Health for treatment before being released.

The complaint also states Fedders refused a certified breath test, had a revoked driver’s license, was driving with fictitious registration plates, and did not have the required insurance on file.

Records show Fedders has two prior OWI convictions in Sioux County, including one earlier this year.

In addition to the two felony charges, he faces several misdemeanor counts, including driving while revoked, driving under suspension, failure to provide proof of financial liability, and fraudulent use of registration.

Fedders was booked into the Sioux County Jail on a $10,000 bond. The two felony charges each carry up to five years in prison.
