A Sioux Center man is facing a felony charge after police say he made threats and caused significant damage inside a home.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the Sioux County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Sioux Center Police Department, 20-year-old David Vander Zwaag of Sioux Center was arrested Thursday following an incident at a residence in town.
In the complaint, an investigating officer says Vander Zwaag allegedly made threatening actions and comments toward two household members, placing them in fear for their safety.
Authorities say Vander Zwaag is also accused of destroying several items inside the home, causing damage estimated at more than $1,500 but less than $10,000.
The complaint further alleges that while Vander Zwaag was being taken into custody, he began resisting responding officers. Police say additional restraints were required to prevent injury to law enforcement officials.
Vander Zwaag has been charged with second-degree criminal mischief, a Class D felony in Iowa. If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison.
He also faces two misdemeanor counts of domestic abuse assault and one misdemeanor count of interference with official acts.
Court records show Vander Zwaag is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Monday, March 17th.
As of the most recent report, Vander Zwaag remained in the Sioux County Jail in Orange City in lieu of a $5,000 cash or surety bond.
