A 31-year-old Sioux Center man faces six charges after his wife told police he assaulted her twice in one day and smashed her phone before she could call for help. Court records say two children witnessed the assaults.
According to complaints filed in Sioux County District Court, the woman went to the Sioux Center Police Department on Friday, October 30, to report what happened the day before. She told officers her husband, Adelfo Humberto Lopez-Martin, became angry Thursday morning after reading a message on her phone. She said he slapped her, threw her to the floor, and kicked her before leaving for work.
The woman told police Lopez-Martin assaulted her again when he returned from work, this time striking her repeatedly with a belt. She said he then smashed her phone, leaving her unable to use it to contact police. An officer documented bruises on her body, including on her fingers and hands where she said she had tried to block the blows.
A judge authorized police to search the home, a detached garage, and vehicles on the property. The warrant listed Lopez-Martin, the belt, and pieces of the phone among the things officers sought. Jail records show Sioux Center police arrested him Friday.
Lopez-Martin faces two counts of first-offense domestic abuse assault causing bodily injury, two counts of child endangerment, one count of third-degree criminal mischief, and one count of obstructing emergency communications.
At last report, he was being held in the Sioux County Jail on a $10,000 cash or surety bond.
