A Sioux Center man was arrested Wednesday, October 28, on a felony charge after allegedly failing to report a change of address for the Iowa Sex Offender Registry.
The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says 44-year-old Robert Leroy Benton was arrested following an investigation into his registry status. He faces a charge of providing false information to the sex offender registry, second or subsequent offense, a Class D felony.
A criminal complaint filed October 8 alleges Benton was no longer living at the address he had provided to the sheriff’s office as of October 2. Investigators allege he failed to provide his new address within the required three business days.
The sheriff’s office confirmed the October 28 arrest was connected to that complaint.
The complaint cites a June 16, 2022, conviction in Colleton County, South Carolina, for failing to comply with sex offender registry requirements as the basis for the repeat-offense charge.
Benton was transported to the Sioux County Jail and released later on October 28 after posting a $5,000 surety bond, according to jail records.
