Sioux Center, Iowa — A Sioux Center man has been arrested on felony eluding charges after a chase in Sioux Center.
According to a criminal complaint filed with the Sioux County Clerk of Court’s Office by the Sioux Center Police Department, 18-year-old Raul Nicolas Diaz of Sioux Center is accused of not stoping for law enforcement and resisting arrest. He was arrested on Saturday.
In a statement, the officer says someone called law enforcement to report Nicolas Diaz getting in and out of his vehicle at the 16th Street and Highway 75 stoplight. The officer says when a county deputy was coming down the road, Nicolas Diaz fled the scene. The Sioux Center officer says when she approached, she saw Nicolas Diaz northbound on 1st Avenue Southeast traveling in excess of 50 miles per hour. She says Nicolas Diaz failed to stop at the 1st Avenue stop sign. A short time later, she says Nicolas Diaz pulled into his driveway and resisted arrest, which led to injury to an officer. She says Nicolas Diaz failed field sobriety tests and blew 0.175 blood-alcohol level, which is over twice the legal limit of 0.08.
Nicolas Diaz was charged with eluding at over 25 miles per hour over the limit, a class D felony. If convicted, Nicolas Diaz could face up to five years in prison. He also faces misdemeanor charges of interference with official acts and operating while intoxicated.
He faces a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, June 11th.
After being booked into the Sioux County Jail in Orange City, Nicolas Diaz posted a $5000 cash or surety bond and was released on Monday.
