A Sioux Center man is facing multiple charges following an alleged drunk driving investigation Sunday evening.
According to court documents, 32-year-old Mateo Martin-Martin of Sioux Center was arrested by the Sioux Center Police Department on June 7. He was charged with second-offense operating while intoxicated, two counts of child endangerment, no valid driver’s license, and possession of a fictitious license or ID card.
Investigation Details
Court records allege officers responded to an erratic driving complaint involving Martin-Martin on 4th Avenue Southeast in Sioux Center. Officers reported observing bloodshot and watery eyes along with the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Martin-Martin.
Authorities say Martin-Martin admitted to consuming alcohol before the interaction. Police also allege that standardized field sobriety tests indicated impairment and that a preliminary breath test showed his blood alcohol concentration was above the legal limit.
According to the criminal complaint, a Datamaster test later showed a BAC of .207 percent.
Children Allegedly in Vehicle
Court documents state two minor children were inside the vehicle at the time of the incident. Officers say transportation for the children was arranged with a friend of Martin-Martin.
The two child endangerment charges allege Martin-Martin knowingly acted in a manner creating a substantial risk to the children’s physical, mental, or emotional health or safety.
Additional Allegations
Authorities also allege Martin-Martin did not have a valid driver’s license and that his driving status was suspended with two withdrawals.
A separate complaint filed June 8 alleges officers located what was believed to be a fictitious identification card bearing Martin-Martin’s name and photograph during a search of a patrol vehicle following his arrest. According to the complaint, the identification number returned no results through NCIC.
Court records additionally show Martin-Martin had a prior OWI conviction in Sioux County from July 2021.
Martin-Martin was held on a $3,000 cash or surety bond before later being released to ICE on June 9, according to jail records.
