As the final week of February approaches, Sioux Center Health is offering one more reminder about the importance of heart health and the role simple movement can play.
February is recognized as American Heart Month — a national campaign that began in 1964 to fight cardiovascular disease and raise awareness about prevention.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, claiming a life about every 34 seconds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC also reports that someone in the U.S. has a heart attack every 40 seconds, and about 1 in 5 of those heart attacks are considered “silent,” causing damage without the person realizing it.
During a recent “HealthCare Happenings” segment, Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab Manager Heather Marra said protecting your heart doesn’t have to mean drastic changes.
This year, Sioux Center Health is focusing on encouraging people to simply get moving. Marra describes what that could be like for individuals.
While general recommendations suggest about 30 minutes of exercise most days of the week, Heather stresses that gradual progress and consistency matter most. The goal is to raise your heart rate and strengthen the heart muscle.
Sioux Center Health is also partnering with local fitness centers to offer community opportunities such as water aerobics and group fitness classes.
Heather encourages people to listen to their bodies. If exercise causes unusual shortness of breath or chest pain, she says it’s important to stop and consult a medical provider.
