A Sioux Center High School graduate is beginning his career with the City of Sioux Center.

Zach Van Beek, a member of Sioux Center Community School District’s Class of 2026, has transitioned from a part-time employee to a full-time street technician with the city’s Street Department after graduating in May.

As a street technician, Van Beek’s responsibilities include maintaining, cleaning, and repairing city streets, rights-of-way, stormwater systems, and public green spaces. His duties also involve operating equipment, assisting with various city projects, and participating in snow removal operations during the winter months.

Utilities Manager Murray Hulstein says the department is excited to have Van Beek join the team.

“We are excited to add a quality young man to our team and look forward to Zach’s career with the city.”

Before joining the city full-time, Van Beek gained part-time experience in agriculture, including farming and hog production.

He says one of the things that attracted him to the position was the variety of work involved.

“I was looking for something new, and I like that this is something different every day: putting up signs, taking care of potholes, street maintenance. I like operating equipment.”

A lifelong Sioux Center resident, Van Beek continues to live in the community. Outside of work, he enjoys fishing, hunting, and watching football and basketball.

Van Beek was a three-sport athlete in high school for the Warriors.

City officials say they look forward to seeing Van Beek grow in his role on the Street Department team.
