The Sioux Center City Council unanimously approved the second reading of an ordinance establishing higher sewer rates for 2027 and 2028 during its October 5th meeting.

All four council members present voted in favor of the measure.

The proposed increases reflect costs associated with the upcoming East Interceptor project and an aging sewer collection system.

Finance Director Darryl Ten Pas referenced an earlier presentation explaining the proposed changes.

“We had Waterworth last month or last meeting showed and explained the rates and the reasons for the increase. Just having our second reading to just notify the public of the rate increase for the next two years,” Ten Pas said.

Under Ordinance SC-R-O-09-26, residential and commercial customers would pay a monthly service charge of $25.42, plus $6.23 per 1,000 gallons, beginning January 1st, 2027.

Beginning January 1st, 2028, the monthly service charge would increase to $27.55, with a usage charge of $6.75 per 1,000 gallons.

The ordinance also establishes revised industrial wastewater rates.

During the meeting, city staff indicated they had not heard any feedback (submitted directly to the city) on the proposal before the council approved the second reading.

The final reading and last chance for residents to weigh in on the increase, before implementation, will be at the October 26th council meeting.
