Monday the Sioux Center City Council invited local Senator Jeff Taylor and local Representative Skyler Wheeler to express their concerns about legislation going through the state government. Council woman Jen Vermeer relayed her concerns that the state government might reduce or get rid of TIF subsidies for towns and cities.
Both Senator Taylor and Representative Wheeler articulated they are not in the appropriate legislative committees to know of any TIF bills, and expressed they are listening to local communities.
City Manager Scott Wynja readressed the TIF concern by laying out his concern the Iowa property tax reform bill would limit or even eliminate TIF indirectly.
TIF is a type of subsidy used by cities and towns in order to bring more businesses into the community. According to Iowa League, TIF works by effectively eliminating property tax incurred from the property value increasing on a plot of land.
