Sioux Center approved a contract for a 12-megawatt power plant, a project three years in the making.
Project Details & Bidding
The facility will be located near the city’s substation and will feature four diesel generators designed to provide 12 megawatts of nominal voltage. The council awarded the construction contract to Hoogendoorn Construction. Their bid was roughly $1 million lower than the city’s $8.25 million construction estimate.
The total project scope is currently projected at $20.3 million, which covers:
- Generation units and switchgear.
- Substation relay and communication work.
- Civil engineering and site construction.
Timeline and Logistics
While grading work on the site is already complete, supply chain factors will dictate the pace of construction. Tilt-up walls for the building currently have an eight-month lead time. Generators will ship in months, but the city isn’t rushing delivery until the building is ready. The council began preparing for the Sioux Center power plant in 2025.
Natural Gas Extension
In a secondary utility move, the council unanimously approved a five-year extension of the city’s throughput agreement with Northern Natural Gas. The contract features an automatic rollover every five years, ensuring continued service for the city’s natural gas needs.
