Sioux Center High School honored area veterans on Tuesday (Nov 11) morning during the school’s annual Veterans Day program.
The ceremony opened with the National Anthem performed by the Sioux Center High School Choir. Members of the American Legion and the Quilts of Valor Foundation were present to award Quilts of Valor to three local veterans: Donald W. Broek, Lawrence Groen, and Jay Vander Stouwe. Gloria Kruid, representing both the Legion and the Foundation, noted the mission of Quilts of Valor is “to cover all combat service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing quilts of valor.”
This year’s featured speaker was Senior Master Sergeant Jonathan Leffring, who has served in the military in South Dakota for more than 19 years. He was introduced by his father, Sioux Center faculty member and fellow veteran Todd Leffring. Senior Master Sergeant Leffring reflected on the opportunities and relationships the military has provided him, noting the pride he takes in being an example for his children.
He also expressed gratitude for the support he has received from his family and the community throughout his service.
Leffring closed by sharing a story about presenting to one of his sons’ classes.
