Property taxes and eminent domain are among the top issues Republican gubernatorial candidate Brad Sherman says he’s hearing as he travels across Iowa.
Speaking on Sioux County Radio’s The Daily Grind, Sherman says concerns about rising property taxes, especially for seniors on fixed incomes, continue to come up in conversations across the state.
He says he would support efforts to reduce or eliminate property taxes on primary residences for retirees.
Eminent domain is another issue Sherman says is frequently raised, particularly in rural communities.
He says private companies should not be allowed to use eminent domain unless it clearly serves a public utility.
Sherman says eminent domain should be limited to true public use.
Sherman says both issues reflect broader concerns about government overreach and protecting individual rights.
Beyond those topics, Sherman also outlined several other priorities during the interview.
He says education reform is a key part of his campaign, including a stronger emphasis on constitutional principles and basic skills in early grades.
Sherman also addressed Iowa’s high cancer rates and water quality concerns, saying the state should pursue independent studies to understand the causes better.
In addition, he says, strengthening rural communities and agriculture could help address the outmigration of young Iowans.
Sherman’s appearance on The Daily Grind came as part of a swing through northwest Iowa. His campaign held meet-and-greet stops in Sioux City on Monday, followed by events in Orange City and Sanborn on Tuesday, with additional stops scheduled in Rock Rapids and Spirit Lake on Wednesday.
Sherman is one of five Republican candidates running for governor. The primary election is scheduled for June 2nd, with absentee voting already underway.
