With growing concern over two of Sioux County’s most dangerous intersections, officials are exploring new safety measures to help prevent future fatalities.
The intersections known as Million Dollar Corner — where Highway 75 meets Highway 10 north of Maurice — and Perkins Corner — at Highway 75 and Highway 18 west of Hull — have drawn renewed attention following several crashes, including one that claimed the life of a 17-year-old from Rock Valley.
Speaking with Sioux County Radio, Chief Deputy Nate Huizenga said he recently met with County Engineer Joel Sikkema and representatives from the Iowa DOT to discuss possible improvements. In the meantime, Huizenga says both the Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Patrol have stepped up patrols in those high-traffic areas.
While additional enforcement and driver education provide only temporary relief, Huizenga says any long-term fix will require state-level funding and planning.
One option receiving serious consideration is installing roundabouts at both intersections. Huizenga notes that roundabouts not only keep traffic flowing but also significantly reduce the severity of crashes by slowing vehicle speeds. He explains why that could make them a safer solution than traditional four-way stops.
Although both intersections remain a focus, Huizenga says the Highway 75 and 18 intersection is currently the higher priority. The Iowa DOT is expected to discuss the issue further at the Sioux County Board of Supervisors meeting on November 12.
