Rock Valley Woman Dies In Kansas Crash

A Rock Valley woman was killed in a traffic accident Saturday morning in southwestern Kansas.

According to a report from the Hays Post, the Kansas Highway Patrol says the crash occurred just before 8:30 a.m. on U.S. Highway 54 near the U.S. 83 junction in Liberal, KS.

Authorities say a 2021 Ford F-350 pickup, driven westbound by 73-year-old Stanley Wayne De Weerd of Rock Valley, struck the driver’s side of a 2022 Kenworth semi as the truck was exiting the west entrance of the Love’s Travel Stop and beginning a left turn to travel east on U.S. 54. The semi was driven by 41-year-old Emmanuel Terrell Lee Jimmerson of North Las Vegas, Nevada.

A passenger in the pickup, 72-year-old Arlis Kay De Weerd of Rock Valley, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Stanley De Weerd was transported to Wesley Medical Center for treatment, while Jimmerson was taken to Southwest Medical Center. The Kansas Highway Patrol reports all occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

The accident remains under investigation.
