Rock Valley Man Charged After Alleged Domestic Assault in Front of Children

A Rock Valley man is facing multiple charges after police say he assaulted his girlfriend in their apartment while two children were present and later prevented her from calling for help.

According to court documents, 29-year-old Yiriel Gonzalez-Gonzalez, of Rock Valley, was arrested Sunday, June 28, following an incident reported around 10:40 p.m. Saturday at an apartment in the 1100 block of 21st Avenue in Rock Valley.

Authorities allege Gonzalez-Gonzalez assaulted his live-in girlfriend by grabbing her by the neck, pushing her, punching her in the face and mouth, and kicking her. The victim reportedly attempted to defend herself with a pan from the stove, and officers later found the pan and food scattered throughout the apartment.

Court records state the woman suffered a swollen and bleeding lip, a small laceration, redness and abrasions to her neck, and pain in her hand and foot.

Investigators also allege that the couple’s two children were in the same room during the assault and were crying during the incident. The presence of the children led to two counts of child endangerment.

According to the criminal complaints, Gonzalez-Gonzalez allegedly took the victim’s cellphone after the assault, preventing her from calling 911. The victim then went to a friend’s apartment, where the friend contacted emergency responders on her behalf.

Gonzalez-Gonzalez has been charged with:

•Domestic Abuse Assault Impeding Air/Blood Flow, an aggravated misdemeanor
•Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Bodily Injury, a serious misdemeanor
•Obstruction of Emergency Communications, a simple misdemeanor
•Two counts of Child Endangerment, aggravated misdemeanors
•Fifth-Degree Theft, a simple misdemeanor
•No Valid Driver’s License, a simple misdemeanor

Court documents also allege he fled the apartment in a gray pickup truck following the incident and did not possess a valid driver’s license.

Gonzalez-Gonzalez was booked into the Sioux County Jail and is being held on a $7,000 cash or surety bond. A no-contact order has also been requested in the case.
