Construction is set to begin April 6th on a $1.88 million sidewalk improvement project along Highways 9 and 75 in Rock Rapids, fully funded by the Iowa Department of Transportation.
The project will include installation and replacement of sidewalks and ramps, along with reconstruction of some driveways and surrounding grading along key portions of both highways through the community.
District 3 Planner with the Iowa DOT, Sarah Tracy, says the primary goal of the project is to bring those areas into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Once complete, the sidewalks along the Highway 9 and 75 corridor are expected to meet ADA standards, improving access for residents and visitors alike.
Along Highway 9, work will stretch from near Westside Park east to just past the Rock River bridge, while along Highway 75, the project runs from the Highway 9 intersection south toward the 7th Avenue area.
Construction will take place throughout the spring and summer months, with completion expected later this year, depending on weather and project conditions.
Traffic along both highways will remain open during construction, though drivers should expect work zones and be mindful of crews working near the roadway.
Rock Rapids’ Chief Operating Officer and Community Development Director, Micah Freese, says the improvements will make a noticeable difference in how residents move through the community.
Freese adds that many areas along the corridor have long needed upgrades, particularly where curbs and sidewalks have deteriorated over time.
Construction is expected to be completed during the 2026 construction season.
