(KIWA) — A Paullina man faces felony burglary and firearm charges after police say he took a rifle from a garage and pointed it at another person.
According to a criminal complaint filed by the Paullina Police Department, 40-year-old Marcus Washington is charged with second-degree burglary and dominion or control of a firearm by a felon. He also faces misdemeanor charges of assault while displaying a dangerous weapon and violation of a no-contact order.
In the complaint, an officer describes receiving a report of someone walking along Broadway in Paullina carrying a rifle. Another person reported that the individual pointed the rifle at them. Following an investigation, officers identified Washington as the person they believe displayed the weapon.
Later that same day, a Paullina resident reported that a firearm had been taken from their garage. According to the complaint, video evidence implicated Washington in the theft.
The complaint also identifies Washington as a convicted felon who is prohibited from possessing firearms.
Second-degree burglary is a Class C felony carrying a potential prison sentence of up to 10 years. The firearm charge is a Class D felony carrying a potential sentence of up to five years.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday, September 25th.
Washington was booked into the O’Brien County Jail in Primghar and released three days later after posting bond.
The charges are accusations, and Washington is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
