Orange City is giving a deadline for residents to trim their trees that are in the right of way.

Over the past six months the City of Orange City measured trees and tree branches to make sure they aren’t intruding in the right of way of sidewalks or the street. Brian Tooker, the Code Enforcement Officer for Orange City, lays out the rules for trees.

“Last six months, the city crew has went around and measured. So anything that’s over eight feet above a sidewalk and fifteen feet above the roadway is what we’re kind of monitoring.”

All residents who have branches they need to trim or remove received a letter from the city telling them what they have to trim. Tooker explains how the rule started.

“It kind of started with the disease control, with the ash trees that are going on. And then the derecho, you know, a year and a half ago, kind of put some stress on a lot of the properties and then just, you know, making sure the right of way is like, if people are backing out, things are clear for safety reasons. And then just kind of getting rid of like dead and damaged branches kind of where this came up.”

The deadline to trim any trees or branches in the right of way is May 31.
