The City of Orange City has approved a lease agreement allowing Zomer Camper and Rental to use a portion of the former Orange City Airport runway for storage.
The city will charge Zomer Camper and Rental $500 per month to use a 500-foot section of the former runway for camper storage during the off-season. City Administrator Matt Van Schouwen says the property has been used in similar ways previously, but the city is now formalizing those arrangements through an official lease agreement.
The former airport property became available after Orange City partnered with Sioux Center and Sioux County to develop the Sioux County Regional Airport near Maurice in 2018–2019. Since then, the city has been evaluating long-term redevelopment options for the roughly 30 to 40 acres it owns at the former airport site.
A portion of the property has already been sold to Vander Pol Excavating. Additional development is being considered for the remaining land.
Plans could include removing the remaining runway and installing streets and utilities to prepare lots for development.
In the meantime, city officials say the lease allows the property to remain productive while broader redevelopment planning continues.
