Hawarden, Iowa — The Hawarden Fire Department was called out in a fire on Tuesday night, November 5, 2024, in Hawarden.
According to Hawarden Fire Chief Payne Allen, at about 11:10 p.m., the Hawarden Fire Department was called to the report of a house full of smoke at 1212 15th Street in Hawarden.
The chief says the fire department saw light smoke outside as they approached the scene. He says they made entry to find the smoke coming from the kitchen area and they determined that the smoke was coming from the oven. He says that somehow the door had locked. They removed the oven from the house.
Allen says one resident was transported to the hospital for evaluation.
The Ireton Fire Department responds to fires in Hawarden’s district and vice versa, but Allen tells us when the Hawarden firefighters knew what they were dealing with, they told Ireton that they didn’t have to come.
He says the cause of the fire appeared to be a malfunction of the oven. Chief Allen reports that damage was limited to the oven. He says the firefighters who responded were on the scene for about 30 minutes.
