Northwestern College has purchased the Mulder Auto Tire and Lube property and the neighboring Subway building at the corner of Highway 10 and K-64 in Orange City. The location, next to the Korver Visual Arts Center and across from the DeWitt Theatre Arts Center, offers a visible site for future campus expansion. The purchase was funded through a strategic quasi-endowment and a major anonymous gift from an alumni couple.
Strategic land acquisition was identified as a priority in Northwestern’s recent campus master plan, and the property is being considered as a possible location for a new academic building in the college’s 10-year facilities plan.
As part of the agreement, Northwestern will transfer the former Cenex/Floral Market building to Scott and Jill Mulder, who plan to move their business there next spring or summer. Renovations on that space are already underway.
The project aligns with other campus improvements, including the upcoming construction of Colenbrander Plaza, a new outdoor gathering area and walkway leading to De Valois Stadium, set to break ground next month.
“This is a win for the Mulders, for Northwestern, and for the community,” said President Greg Christy. “We’re excited about how this property will enhance our campus in the years ahead.”
