Northwest Iowa airports are getting a lift—literally and financially—thanks to a fresh wave of funding from the Iowa Department of Transportation. As part of the Fiscal Year 2026 State Aviation Program, the Iowa Transportation Commission has approved $9.6 million in state support for airport development, safety enhancements, and infrastructure upgrades across the state.
While the program spans dozens of airports, several in our region are receiving targeted investments that promise to boost both operational efficiency and long-term economic vitality.
At Sioux County Regional Airport, crews will begin work on the South Apron Expansion – Phase II, a $376,000 project with nearly $283,000 coming from the state. This expansion supports growing demand for aircraft parking and maneuverability, especially during peak ag and business travel seasons.
Spencer Municipal Airport is set to improve access with hangar approach construction, a $207,000 initiative backed by $165,000 in state funds. The upgrades will streamline aircraft movement and support future hangar development.
In Sheldon, a more behind-the-scenes but equally vital project will unfold: the creation of a zoning ordinance tailored to airport land use. With $17,000 in state support, this planning effort ensures safe development around the airport and aligns with long-term aviation goals.
Le Mars Municipal Airport will undergo a dual upgrade: taxiway construction and apron reconstruction, totaling $550,000. The state’s contribution of $320,000 will help modernize aircraft movement areas and extend the life of critical pavement.
Sibley Municipal Airport will tackle runway pavement repairs, a $60,000 project that keeps the facility safe and operational for general aviation traffic. The state is covering $48,000 of the cost.
Over in Milford, a $55,000 tree removal and trimming project will clear runway approaches and mitigate potential hazards. With $44,000 in state funding, the effort reflects the DOT’s emphasis on obstruction mitigation and wildlife safety.
Spirit Lake Municipal Airport will receive $48,800 in state support for obstruction mitigation, ensuring clear flight paths and compliance with FAA safety standards.
Finally, Estherville Municipal Airport is embracing turf innovation with a parallel taxiway construction project. At $570,000, with $399,000 from the state, the new taxiway will enhance safety and reduce congestion during takeoffs and landings.
These projects are part of a broader strategy that includes runway markings, wildlife hazard mitigation, and air service development. According to Iowa DOT Aviation Director Tim McClung, the program reflects a commitment to “maintaining safe, efficient airports that support local economies and connect communities.”
As these upgrades take shape, Northwest Iowa’s airports aren’t just keeping pace—they’re preparing for takeoff.
