Members of the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office recently took part in advanced defensive and arrest tactics training — an exercise designed to enhance officer safety and strengthen response readiness when dealing with uncooperative individuals.

The session was led by Ryan Laroco, the Defensive Tactics Instructor for the Sioux Center Police Department, who provided practical demonstrations and coached participants through simulated encounters. Laroco says that defensive tactics can be a vital skill.

Laroco says he’s had vast experiences by serving in the military, as an officer for the Hawarden Police Department, and has worked in private security as well. During his time in the military, Laroco was a trainer for a mechanical advantage control hold in marine martial arts. He’s also had training in other various forms of mixed martial arts. He shares how that experience has equipped him to aid others.

While deputies hope they never have to use the skills, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office says that such training is essential for ensuring both officer and public safety. Laroco notes that some in the law enforcement community worry officers sometimes turn to force too quickly instead of using other tactics.

Officials say the department continues to invest in ongoing professional development, emphasizing that preparation is key to maintaining safety, professionalism, and trust in the communities they serve.
