Students from 13 area schools, including homeschoolers, recently gathered at Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC) in Sheldon for the annual “Scrubs Camp.” This immersive event welcomed about 90 middle and high school students for a day of hands-on healthcare career exploration.
Hosted by NCC’s Health Science programs in partnership with local healthcare providers, Scrubs Camp introduced 7th-12th graders to various healthcare fields, such as EMS, Paramedic, Nursing, CNA, Radiologic Technology, Pharmacy Technology, Medical Lab Technology, Surgical Technology, Health Information Technology, and Medical Coding.
Throughout the day, students participated in eight interactive mini-sessions led by NCC faculty. One of the highlights was an emergency care live-action simulation, presented in collaboration with the Sheldon Community Ambulance Team (SCAT) and the Mercy Air Care helicopter team. This real-time trauma scenario showcased the vital role of teamwork in patient care.
Students expressed excitement about the hands-on experience. Kevin Miller, Associate Dean of Health at NCC, emphasized the importance of teamwork in healthcare, noting that every career plays a crucial role in patient outcomes. Area schools that participated in the educational event, include: Boyden-Hull, MOC, West Sioux, Sioux Center, Sheldon, Unity Christian, Western Christian, and Rock Valley.
Scrubs Camp was made possible thanks to the generous support of local healthcare sponsors, allowing all interested students to participate free of charge.
