Northwest Iowa Community College (NCC) has been recognized by the Aspen Institute as one of the top 200 community colleges in the United States eligible for the 2027 Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The $1 million prize is considered the nation’s highest recognition for community colleges demonstrating strong student outcomes both during and after college.
Among more than 1,000 public community colleges nationwide, NCC is one of just 16 institutions to have earned recognition in all nine Aspen Prize cycles since 2011—placing it in the top 1.6% of community colleges across the country.
NCC President Dr. John Hartog said the honor reflects the dedication of the college’s students, staff, and trustees in providing “high-quality, accessible, and affordable education” for northwest Iowa. NCC has previously been named both a Top 10 and Top 20 finalist for the Aspen Prize.
The Aspen Prize selection process evaluates colleges based on student retention, graduation, transfer, and post-graduation success. The 2027 winner will be announced in spring 2027 following a multi-stage review process.
