(KIWA) — Moderate drought conditions are expanding across northwest Iowa, with nearly all of Lyon County now included in the latest U.S. Drought Monitor report.
In the latest report, released last week, moderate drought within the four-county area was limited to extreme southern O’Brien County and extreme southeastern Sioux County. The latest report shows moderate drought now covering most of Lyon County.
Extreme eastern Lyon County and small portions of southeastern and southwestern Lyon County remain classified as abnormally dry.
Statewide, 55% of Iowa remains free of abnormal dryness or drought. Moderate drought now covers 26% of the state, primarily across northern and western Iowa.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has issued drought watches for both the northwest and southwest drought regions. State experts say western Iowa’s drought conditions could persist and potentially expand through October as the state enters its typically drier season.
