George, Iowa — When emergency responders arrived at the call of a fire near George Friday evening, a body was found.
According to Lyon County Sheriff Brian Hilt, the call they received indicated the caller was unable to locate a male at a hog confinement in rural George, and there appeared to have been a small fire of some sort in the building. He says they responded and were on-scene by about 5:50 p.m.
The sheriff says responders were unable to locate the individual in the building but they did locate a deceased male outside of the building. He says the incident is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s Office, but foul play is not suspected and the incident did not appear to be a suicide.
According to George Fire Assistant Chief Josh Eben, firefighters found a slightly burnt curtain and light smoke inside the building. He said they did tear down some ceiling and found smoldering insulation, which they removed from the building.
Eben says there was minimal damage, and firefighters and EMTs from George Emergency Medical Service were on the scene for about an hour and a half.
