Lyon County Introduces SRO Program for 2025-26 School Year

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office introduced a School Resource Officer (SRO) at the start of the 2025-26 school year.

Lyon County Deputy Bill Minor has been named the School Resource Officer. The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office shared in a Facebook post that Deputy Minor has years of law enforcement experience, has served as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE), and is a firearms instructor and Taser instructor. In addition to that, he is a parent of school-age children himself.

Minor will serve kindergarten through 12th grade and have a presence in all three public school districts in Lyon County. He will also occasionally appear at Inwood Christian School and Northwest Iowa Protestant School in Doon. Minor says the goal is to have students comfortable with the presence of officers at a young age.

The post states that the SRO will have a three-fold mission. The first facet is enhancing school safety and having a law enforcement presence in the school. The second is to provide or assist in providing instruction as requested by the schools. The third is to be an additional role model and a listening ear to the youth. But Minor will also have a role in educating the students and teachers.

Minor says that he’s received a warm welcome from the schools.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office praised the superintendents, principals, school boards, and the Lyon County Board of Supervisors for their support in the addition of a School Resource Officer.
