Lyon County Courthouse Closed Following Overnight Incident

Update at 11:30 am on Wednesday, December 17th

More details have been released regarding the incident that led to the closure of the Lyon County Courthouse in Rock Rapids.

According to an update from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, the courthouse was burglarized during the overnight hours of December 16th into December 17th. Authorities say entry was made into the building, and multiple areas of the courthouse sustained significant damage.

Reported damage includes writing on walls, broken glass, knocked-over Christmas trees, and items thrown throughout the building.

The Sheriff’s Office says deputies were contacted Wednesday morning by a county employee who arrived at the courthouse and observed evidence of the burglary. Deputies, along with Iowa State Patrol troopers, responded, searched the building, and continued to process the scene.

To preserve the integrity of the investigation and allow time for cleanup, the courthouse will remain closed to the public for the remainder of the week.

Officials say the building was not occupied at the time of the burglary, and no injuries were reported. No suspects are currently in custody, though authorities say suspect information and photos of the damage are expected to be released later today.

Due to the ongoing investigation, the Sheriff’s Office says additional information will be released as it becomes available.
