Kwik Star Planning to Phase Out Pennies

A major Midwest convenience store chain will soon start phasing out pennies.

With over 140 locations in Iowa, Kwik Star says it’ll adjust its registers to round prices for cash purchases down to the nearest nickel once it can no longer obtain pennies from banks. Prices for those using debit or credit cards will remain the same.

The Treasury Department ordered its final shipment of blanks to be turned into pennies in May.

U.S. Mint officials say the cost of producing a penny is nearly four times what it’s worth.
