Inwood Man Charged with Kidnapping After Alleged Incident in Sheldon

(KIWA) — An Inwood man faces several felony and misdemeanor charges after authorities allege he forced a woman into his vehicle in Sheldon and drove away with her against her will.

According to a Sioux County Sheriff’s Office criminal complaint, 25-year-old Joseph James Haack of Inwood was arrested Thursday and charged with third-degree kidnapping.

The deputy who filed the complaint alleges Haack threatened to harm the victim’s children if she did not go with him.

Haack is also accused of telling the victim he was going to kill her, physically assaulting her, and refusing to let her leave the vehicle.

According to the complaint, the victim was able to call for help when Haack stopped to purchase alcohol in Boyden.

Haack has been charged with third-degree kidnapping, a Class C felony punishable by up to ten years in prison if convicted.

He also faces a Class D felony charge of assaulting a protected party, which carries a possible sentence of up to five years in prison.

Additional charges include:

•First-degree harassment

•Domestic abuse assault

•Driving while license denied or revoked

The three additional charges are misdemeanors.

Haack is scheduled to appear for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, July 21.

At last report, he remained in the Sioux County Jail in Orange City on a $50,000 cash-only bond.
