Huizenga: National Police Week Reminder of Sacrifice Behind the Badge

As communities across the country observe National Police Week, Nate Huizenga says the week serves as a time to honor fallen officers and recognize the continued risks faced by law enforcement every day.

National Police Week runs from May 10th through May 16th. Friday is National Peace Officers Memorial Day, a day honoring officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The observance was established in 1962 after President John F. Kennedy designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day. National Police Week includes memorial services and tributes held across the country.

Huizenga says the observance has carried personal meaning for him since early in his law enforcement career. While attending the academy in 1999, he had the opportunity to attend a memorial service in Washington, D.C.

The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office echoed that message in a social media post, saying National Police Week is a time to “honor and remember the brave law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving and protecting their communities.”

While Sioux County is often viewed as a relatively safe place to live, Huizenga says law enforcement officers in rural communities still face dangerous situations and cannot afford to become complacent.

Huizenga says ongoing training and preparation remain critical for officers throughout the county.

He also emphasized the close working relationships between local agencies, saying sheriff’s deputies, city police departments, and other law enforcement agencies regularly respond together on major calls.

Huizenga says Sioux County’s growth has also brought new challenges for law enforcement in recent years, including increased calls for service, substance abuse issues, and mental health-related situations.

Still, he says one of the things he appreciates most about Sioux County is the strong relationship between law enforcement officers and the communities they serve.

He says that officers still show up and put their lives on the line daily.

National Police Week concludes Saturday.
