Hawarden Proposes Lower Property Tax Rate for Upcoming Year

Property tax rates in Hawarden are expected to decrease for the upcoming fiscal year, but the overall impact on residents will depend on a combination of factors beyond the city’s control.

According to a tax statement released ahead of upcoming public hearings, the city is proposing a lower levy rate, dropping from about $14.40 to $13.02 per $1,000 of taxable value.

City Administrator Jacob Stoner says rising property valuations are a key factor behind that shift.

Even with the lower city rate, total property tax bills may still increase depending on changes from other taxing entities like the West Sioux School District and Sioux County.

An example provided in the tax statement shows that while city taxes on a typical residential property would decrease, increases at the school and county level could offset those savings.

City officials say several factors are shaping this year’s budget, including planned tree removal, park improvements, increased contributions to the chamber, wage adjustments, and rising insurance costs.

A public hearing on the proposed tax levy is scheduled for Tuesday evening, April 8th, at 5:30 at the Hawarden City Council Chambers.

Another public hearing on the full budget is expected later in April.
