A traffic stop in Sioux Center on Wednesday led to a wide range of charges, including a felony, against a Hawarden man, while a passenger in the vehicle is also facing multiple charges tied to the same incident.
According to court documents and arrest records, 38-year-old Ian Shea Hultquist of Hawarden was arrested on Wednesday, March 25th, after a stop near 19th Street Southwest and South Main Avenue frontage road.
Authorities say Hultquist showed signs of drug impairment and performed poorly on field sobriety tests. He also exhibited indicators consistent with drug use, including tremors and balance issues, and admitted to being a drug user.
A search of the vehicle allegedly revealed methamphetamine, along with a card in Hultquist’s wallet that tested positive for the drug. Investigators also say he had Suboxone without a valid prescription.
Court documents indicate Hultquist had just left the Sioux Center Walmart before the stop. During a consent search of the vehicle, officers located multiple stolen items from the store.
Hultquist now faces several charges, including operating while under the influence (first offense), multiple counts of possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, driving while suspended, and theft in the fifth degree.
However, the most serious charge stems from what investigators say happened after his arrest.
According to the complaint, once Hultquist arrived at the Sioux County Jail, officers discovered a glass pipe containing methamphetamine and residue that had been concealed on his person.
That led to an additional charge of possession of contraband in a correctional facility, a felony under Iowa law.
Authorities also note that Hultquist’s driver’s license was suspended at the time, and that required SR-22 insurance was not on file.
Passenger Also Facing Charges
A passenger in the vehicle, 22-year-old Samantha Alyson Mackie of Hawarden, was also arrested.
According to court records, Mackie is charged with fifth-degree theft tied to the Walmart incident, where authorities say stolen merchandise totaled about $86.69.
Arrest records also show Mackie faces additional charges, including violation of probation and multiple counts of contempt of court for failure to pay fines or costs.
She was released the following day on an unsecured $15,000 bond, meaning she was not required to pay the full amount upfront but must appear for future court proceedings.
Both individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
