Hawarden Man Arrested on Multiple Charges Following Traffic Stop

A Hawarden man is facing several charges after a traffic stop on Sunday afternoon. The Sioux County Sheriff’s Office says the arrest happened just before 2:30 p.m. on Coolidge Avenue, when a deputy clocked a vehicle traveling 89 miles per hour in a 55 zone.

Deputies identified the driver as 47-year-old Jose Nunez of Hawarden. During the stop, officers suspected Nunez was under the influence of alcohol and found an open container and THC vaping devices inside the vehicle. Authorities also say he was traveling with a minor passenger and had another person provide breath samples to bypass his vehicle’s ignition interlock device.

Nunez was taken to the Sioux County Jail and charged with operating while under the influence, third offense; child endangerment; possession of marijuana, third or subsequent offense; circumventing an ignition interlock device; operating a motor vehicle while barred; speeding; and open container.
